A FreeBSD-5.4 STABLE or RELEASE with Xorg 6.8 and dri enabled for an Radeon 
7000 VE QY freeze computer. 
 
A FreeBSD-5.4 STABLE or RELEASE with Xorg 6.7 and dri enabled for an Radeon 
7000 VE QY works fine. 
 
A FreeBSD-5.4 STABLE or RELEASE or a FreeBSD-6.0 STABLE or RELEASE with Xorg 
6.8 and dri enabled for an Radeon 7000 VE QY freeze computer. 
 
After those remarks i think that it is not a kernel problem. 
It is a Xorg 6.8 bug.
