I believe the drivers built in the Mesa tree are built with -fPIC, so that should make some differenc. I wouldn't think it would cut performance in half, though. Remove '-fPIC' from CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS in configs/linux-solo and rebuild. See if that restores things.
