I'm currently installing the DRI drivers for some of my graphics cards
on various boxes and try them on modern games, only to find out that
none is usable for 3D. I have a Mach64 Rage Pro, an MGA G400 and a
Banshee card (and a Voodoo 2 and TNT2 too) Games tried are Q3A and UT
full versions, UT2003 and UT 2004 demos and Americas Army (is it based
on UT2003?) Only the Q3A and UT are playable with the DRI drivers (same
as at the time when I tried UtahGLX.)

Is the slowness mainly due to the missing DXTC/S3TC functionality, or
are they just too old? I also have an ATI 9000 PRO available, not
installed yet though. Should I go for the ATI commercial drivers or is
there a chance I can use the DRI drivers. I really would like to use
open source drivers wherever possible :) I also have an ATI 9800
installed on another box, and for that card the only option so far is
the commercial alternative, right?

A question about the Mach64 driver. Is there an option for gamma
correction in this driver? For example is UT almost unplayable since
everything is too dark. Also, which configuration option to set to
enable DMA for the Mach64 and MGA drivers. Both are using MMIO according
to the XFree86 log file. (I know that Mach64 is not secure yet. Still I
would like to enable DMA, asynch or sync?)

Is there any hope for open source drivers for high performance cards,
taking into consideration the binary alternatives available for cards
from ATI, Nvidia or Matrox (Parhelia), etc?
