This is probably related to the missing xdm-authorization code in the DRI built XFree86 server. Not sure though, I think it's usually only a problem with kdm, which tries to use xdm-auth even if it's not available per default (changeable in the config file). But maybe your xdm is configured to always use xdm-auth.
