I don't think you are replacing anything. No one is actively "officially" working on the via drivers as part of xfree86 or the dri. xfree86 just accepts patches for the most part. and after alan fixed up the 3d side, no one really took the lead on getting it into cvs. FWIW, I think your project _is_ about as official as it gets. I'd love to help out, but I don't have the hardware (or the time right now).
