Why, pray tell, are you using the mach64 branch with an i830? Please go to http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/Download and get a recent binary snapshot. That will install the *correct* driver for your chip. If that still doesn't work (and it may not), please send your complete XF86Config (or XF86Config-4 depending on your system), /var/log/XFree86.0.log, and relevant information from /var/log/messages ('grep -i drm' should do the trick).
