sorry for going off topic now, the following
is not tightly related to dri development works
but only to the embedding reallity in the real
world of software development.

The DRI drivers dont have a problem with S3TC,
they simply dont expose those patented color format.
If there is a problem, then there is the problem
that patents do have problem with free software
and open source such as XFree86 licensed or GPL
licensed software - if the S3TC ownership consortium
(better say the grafics industry and Microsoft 
and some companys that dont do grafics at all)
would like Free Software to have S3TC then they
are free to do so - but they seem to have a problem
doing so.

If a computer game is unable to detect S3TC presence
then it can be considered flawed - if it were open
source, you could fix that and provide a patch.
Since it is not OpenSource, you have to work around 
this in a less pleasant manner and hope that the
software vendor will fix it for you somedays.
