Sorry. At the time there was some discussion about this on the dri-devel list,
so I was pretty lazy with the description. The relevant discussion starts here:

There used to be some implicit assumptions the GLX code in libGL.so that a
context would be bound when various functions (such as glXSwapBuffers) were
called. All of those places should be fixed by now in DRI CVS, and those fixes
have already been merged to XFree86 CVS.
It should be safe to close this bug now.
