Something that's been floating around in my head for a while is that the
mi shadow module isn't particularly well suited for page flipping
because it only updates the second buffer at regular intervals (every
1/50 second AFAIK). I finally got around to trying the XFree86 shadowfb
module instead, and with

http://penguinppc.org/~daenzer/DRI/radeon-pageflip-shadowfb.diff

I haven't seen any artifacts yet with WindowMaker (which rarely showed
artifacts even before) or metacity (which very often showed artifacts
before). So anybody who has experienced artifacts with page flipping,
please try this and let me know how it goes.
