Does glxinfo say "Direct Rendering: Yes" ? On my Redhat 8 test system I've tried current xfree packages and nightly bleeding edge packages and this works nice. You could install updated xfree from ftp://people.redhat.com/mharris/testing/extremely-unstable-development-code/XFree86/4.2.99.2-0.20021110.5/i386 and than get nightly trunk build http://dri.sf.net/snapshots/bleeding-edge. I added '/sbin/modprobe agpgart' to /etc/rc.d/rc.local so agpgart loaded on my next boot and that worked.
