Both 2D and 3D should basically work in the latest X release. 3D can be somewhat unstable, if you're unlucky. But I just tried latest mesa-4-1-branch CVS, and it seems to work very well (no crashes in return to castle wolfenstein anymore). I haven't used ATI's proprietary drivers for quite a while now, so I can't really compare. Performance is still a bit sloppy, but I hope that'll improve.

As a summary, I think you should give the drivers a try. 2D support is better IMHO, as it includes XV-support.

I don't know the status of the multi-head capabilities of the open-source drivers compared to the closed ones.
