I don't know why it crashes with the extras stuff - maybe the RedHat RPM
includes some patches which aren't applied in XFree/DRI CVS which break
the binary compatability, but it since you already have a 4.2.99 XFree86
server from there, there is no need to use the one in the extras dir, as
that stuff is only for people with XFree86 4.2.1 or older.

Is this a regression relative to before installing this new rpm? That
is, were the bleeding-edge snapshots working properly before?

AFAIK, the debugging enabled in the libxaa is only the debugging info
generated by the compiler - there is no code changes so the slowdown
must be caused by other reason.

One thing to do is analize the source RPM, As usual Mike Harris provides
the patches seperately on
ftp://people.redhat.com/mharris/testing/extremely-unstable-development-code/XFree86/4.2.99.2-0.20021110.5/raw-sources-patches-specfile/

I'm afraid that Keith or Michel have to step in to fill the blanks
because I feel a little lost in respect with the latest Radeon developments.
