The tdfx-2-1-branch didn't have any support for S3TC texture compression.
That branch had some support for 3Dfx's FXT1 compression instead.  S3TC != FXT1.
I don't know of any games/apps that use the later.

As I wrote last week, we're trying to get permission from S3 to implement
S3TC in Mesa and some DRI drivers.  No word yet...
