This may be a result of contention between the sound card and graphics card. 
So far nobody has reported success with tribes2, so you're doing well just to 
get it running...

There is a patch coming through that will reduce the mmio load in situations 
where the cpu is waiting for the card, which is often the case in menus.  This 
may help your problem.
