THanks a lot for all of your help. I downloaded the latest CVS from xfree86.org/cvs and compiled it after a little bit of tinkering (at the beginning of every make World, it would delete the directory exports/lib and then complain it couldn't find libXau.a and libXpm.a, so finally i just ran make World, then created the directory and copied the missing libs from /usr/X11R6/lib)
Also, I'm not sure whawt the word is on the official status of the 3d supports, but according to glxinfo and glxgears, mine appears to be working.
