Just some general notes on DRI future from my personal
perspective.
I think Gareth Hughes has contributed an enormous amount to the
DRI project, as have many others at VA, and that while their
continued contributions are certainly appreciated, one should not
expect them to be married to the code just because they wrote it
or worked on it in the past. This goes for Mesa, and XFree86
also of course, and related projects.
If they do not wish to work on older hardware or code, we should
respect that. It is entirely possible we will see contributions
from them still, but we should not expect them. I think the word
"abandoning" it, it a bit harsh, as it could be interpreted to
imply to a certain extent that they owe something more to
everyone, which I am not insinuating you are meaning, but which
very well could be perceived nonetheless.
We should be thankful to these projects, and look forward to
seeing them continue with as much or as little support as
current and/or past project contributors are willing to give.
If everyone truely has their spirit in the DRI project, they will
band together and try to establish good strong communication
channels with each other, with current/past DRI members, and also
importantly with hardware vendors.
Being very friendly and polite with the hardware vendors, and
very patient, is probably one of the most critical factors in
keeping DRI going.
Lets all wish Gareth the best of luck with his new job, and hope
that in his spare time perhaps, him and other DRI/Mesa/etc.
developers will continue to work on these projects as long as
they find them enjoyable.
I'd like to extend a personal thanks for all of the fantastic
work that has been done, to all those who have contributed to
these efforts of bringing 3D to Linux.
Sincerly,
Mike
