Hi all. GSoC rolls around again. Time to start planning.
This year there's a big change from Google: projects will be shorter — about half the number of hours over a 6-10 week block — and open to a wider range of candidates, not just from universities. I think this means that if we're going to partake we need to pick smaller, ticket sized issues and have a mentor have half-a-mind for an implementation approach, so as to be able to guide effectively. - I will begin adding a gsoc keyword, and any notes that seem appropriate, to tickets that I'm browsing over the next couple of months with that in mind. (Anyone else browsing is welcome to do the same 🙂) - If you think, "Yes, I could mentor a smaller scale ticket" then do let me know. The number of students we can take is bound by this. Secondly, lastly year Kacper did a project for django-stubs that went well — opening it up was good. I want to ask at least the Jazzband and Wagtail communities if joining GSoC under the Django umbrella might work for them. If you're in those groups: do you have student-sized tickets? Do you have mentors? If so, let's chat. Other established third-party apps could also do this conceivably. At this point it's early plans but: - Do we want to do it? - Do we have mentors (or how many)? - Can we make it work with third-party apps from the ecosystem?
