Thanks Hasan for offering to help. Either of Carles's approaches would work -- I don't have a strong view. Making the smaller fix (ie adding transform=str every time assertQuerysetEqual fails) would require the least thinking. But it may miss some good opportunities to refactor or simplify the tests.
