To answer your question though: thanks to the hard work of many people, Django 1.2 and 1.3 added a ton of useful features. It'd be a shame if you learned about a feature only to find out that you can't use it because you're running 1.1. For example, class-based generic views alone (added in 1.3) improved the general quality of my life by 47%. So I suggest you work with 1.3 if at all possible.
