Adding IPv6 support seems like a reasonable proposal to me, and the
patch looks good in principle.

Based on the comments on the ticket, I'm assuming that the current
patch doesn't apply cleanly, so I've marked it 'patch needs
improvement'; if anyone can validate that the patch applies cleanly
(or can update it so that it does), feel free to move to ready for
checkin.
