It seems auto_now_add is not really recommended - LazyDate is. I'm

We should remove it, because it causes problems with the admin. (It's
too much of a special case.)

Does LazyDate work when you're not going through the admin? I often use auto_now_add as an automatic timestamp on objects I might not be editing in the admin; I'd be sad if that broke.
