I presume that XCF to JPG is crude because the format is loosy, where as
the PNG format is not. I always use PNG until the final production copy
of a document is produced, for this reason.
BMP are like TIFF files. They are like straight up screen dumps. They
are usually very large and quality is dictated by the bits and colour
settings. In order to get anything of value most BMP or TIFF files are
20-30 MB in size. Comparable PNG files are <1MB in size.
