Wes, Oh. I tried a web search for 'sshd debug' and found no relevant hits. FWIW, before the old desktop died I regulary used rsync and scp (as a user, not root) to move files between the two. There must be some reason why stopping and re-starting sshd after adding root to the AllowUsers key doesn't resolve the problem.
