Is it wise to use the buffer after Surface->Unlock()?

(ie)
void *buffer;
int pitch;
surface->Lock(surface,DSLF_READ|DSLF_WRITE,&buffer,&pitch);
surface->Unlock(surface);
...
...
//accessing the buffer after unlock
* buffer = 0xffff0000;
...
....

In my platform(STM 71xx) it works fine. Does it impose any issues for other
GFX cards?
