The recommendation is that you think of upstreaming early. The longer it takes
you to upstream, the more stale your changes may be and the more difficult it
may become to merge them.
Related to this, making sure your changes align with the project goals
and platform direction, and getting buy-in for your changes, increases
the chance that upstreaming will be a smooth process.
