I would revive this to see if we can make a resolution.

In academic publishing it is quite common to have something like
"Acknowledgement of Funding Source" -- This is not ambiguous what it
means to "support" or whatever. However it is in academic publishing
an obligation usually to report funding sources (for ethical
considerations).

If the resolution is to prohibit acknowledgements of non-technical
contributions (funding), we should document it.
