The second way is to boot to RTEMS or something else and write new files back to the card. The 2nd will result in heavy SD card wear and is complicated to get working correctly over time. I've had to do this before but not with FDT. The issue is things change over time and this 'write back' becomes a moving target. This results in multiple test environments based on specific sets of source it's a lot of overhead. It's easy to say it looks good now but that's rarely true in 5, 10, 15 years down the road when you still have to support old branches and sometimes multiple versions within those branches.
