On Ubuntu I have: $ file /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/python: symbolic link to python2.7 $ apt-file search /usr/bin/python | grep "/usr/bin/python$" python-minimal: /usr/bin/python This looks like a packaging issue on Ubuntu.
