What if we did something like: CFLAGS_OPTIMIZE_V ?= -O0 CFLAGS_DEBUG_V ?= -g CFLAGS_OPTIMIZE_V += $(CFLAGS_DEBUG_V) -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections Is that too much?
