Hello,

shortly before I go on holiday, I thought it is a good time to start a 
discussion about version numbers. GCC recently changed their version number 
scheme and it might be something that fits also quite good for RTEMS.  The 
major releases are indicated by the left-most number followed by a dot and then 
we have 0 for the development version, 1 for the first major release, 2 for the 
first bugfix release, and so on.  So for example the next major release of 
RTEMS would be 5.1 and the master branch currently 5.0.
