Yes, this is intended as a replacement for libi2c. The big problem with libi2c is that it is too close to a particular hardware model which makes bus driver development sometimes extremely difficult or even impossible.

No, but we plan to update the BSPs maintained by us to switch to the new I2C framework in the long run.
