I considered proposing a checkmake package too.

We should do a new release soon-ish. But there is no fixed plan on a date
yet.

Since I've only recently been added as a maintainer and the original
creator is inactive,
I'll first need to figure out the release process.

The checks themselves seem limited. Are there plans for more? It might be

The checks are indeed limited and it would be nice to add more.
There are however currently no  concrete plans for new checks but good
ideas/suggestions  are of course welcome.
