IMHO it should default to this:
if os.path.exists(os.path.expanduser('~/.fedora.upn')):
with open(os.path.expanduser('~/.fedora.upn'), 'r') as f:
username = f.read().replace('\n', '')
else:
username = getpass.getuser()
