maven, while not ideal, is just a reflection of the Java community values SUN impulsed. I still remember when maven was introduced.
We (Fedora) were enthusiastic. As problematic as maven is, the alternatives (osgi, manual classpaths in shell scripts) were much worse. Which tells a lot about Java community values :(
