Just to close the loop here...

I adjusted the varnish cache parameters there to have longer timeouts
and also I found that it was only using one of our 2 kojipkgs as
backends, so I got the second one working.

I monitored it over the weekend and it only hit one 503. :(

In any case it should be much better now, if folks run into problems
again with it, please file a infra ticket and we will see what we can do
(which isn't too much since it's a slow link).
