There are many ways to install Tomcat in an operating system. Different flavors of Linux manage system services differently, and layout of Tomcat files differs between OS vendors, based on their preferences. The OS-specific service startup scripts are not provided by Apache Tomcat project, but by your (unnamed) OS vendor. If you have further questions on using Tomcat, you may ask on the users@ mailing list.
