A notable feature of Gradle is that it does not require the build tool to be pre-installed, it provides a wrapper mechanism that downloads the specified version of the tool when it runs. I think that the syntax of the Gradle DSL is easier to understand than Maven (certainly for new users) and it happily integrates with various of the popular repos and other build tool plugins.
