Can I use NTLM authentication? With help from the Samba folks, it is possible<http://jcifs.samba.org/src/docs/ntlmhttpauth.html>. It's actually misleading at this point because JCIFs doesn't do NTLMv2 and therefore recommends using Jespa right on that page. I think JCIFs is not a workable alternative anymore and Jespa is a commercial implementation (and I don't think ASF's goal is to sell more software :). You may also want to suggest the newly added non-commercial alternative(s), starting with http://waffle.codeplex.com.
