I've actually been hit by the blank page issue too a year ago, with a production system's home page returning a blank page and not being noticed for a while (monitoring tools all saw it's a 200 OK and didn't report an error). I didn't know how to recreate it at the time... funny that you hit it with this bug's investigation... (well, maybe funny isn't the right word). So, are both issues fixed by these patches? the blank screen replaced with an error, and the error replaced with a successful page load?
