But it should, since both 32 and 64 bits are supported
and can live together.
The main reason is the installer which is 32bit and creates
the key under Wow6432Node
Any 64bit would simply fail because of missing registry.

The solution is to move your existing key to Wow6432Node
like you observed. I doubt it's worth to complicate things
and add extra checking for registry.
