IMHO, Rainer is wrong here. Those other conditions cannot be satisfied
with Number.class.isAssignableFrom(type).

E.g., the following call returns false, as I have tested with Java 1.6.0_05:
 Number.class.isAssignableFrom(Integer.TYPE)
