Whenever I had a couple of hours I was doing small tests with scripting. I think the most valuable first step would be the transformation to APR. Unfortunately this is something I could hekp with, but I wouldn't want to lead, because my experience with APR programing is only medium.
Once APR would be there, I would start working on management threads. But APR is the necessary big first step (at least that's what I think) ...
