The main reason I don't do that is that I want to have each branch setup correctly (Java version, dependencies, etc.) in an IDE. Eclipse, at least, doesn't cope well with that. It seems that Git does offer greater flexibility in this area which gives all of us the opportunity to tweak things to our personal liking.
