Summary: provide support for protocol-independent GenericServlet
           Product: Tomcat 5
           Version: 5.5.9
          Platform: Other
               URL: http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-
                    doc/servletapi/javax/servlet/GenericServlet.html
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: Catalina
        AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The API doc for javax.servlet.GenericServlet states: "Defines a generic,
protocol-independent servlet."

Currently Tomcat does not support protocol-independent servlets, because there
has to be a HTTP header line to route the message to a web applicaton and
servlet.

To support protocol-independent servlets, there would have to be a mapping from
a dedicated port to the GenericServlet instance. For each active GenericServlet
Tomcat would have to create a ServerSocket, listen on it and route traffic to
the GenericServlet instance.

Protocol-independent GenericServlets would be useful for hosting Socket Server
applications within Tomcat, so the application developer wouldn't have to cope
with Sockets and threading issues. In the original spirit of Servlets Tomcat
would open up to a greater range of server based applications beside web
applications.
