While "x++" looks somehow atomic it simply isn't. Read as "x = x+1". Whether x is volatile or not simply doesn't matter. In order to do correct access counting, you need to synchronize or use the atomics provided in Java 5. And anyone who opposes that should remove the variable altogether as it doesn't do any good then.
