Peter,
Thanks for responding back. As for the Find & Replace feature. It doesn't
matter what word I am looking for. It will stop at several words plus the
one I am looking for.
what you're seeing probably isn't broken — there's a setting switched
on that tells Writer to find words that are close to what you typed, not
just the exact word. That's why it keeps stopping on "right", "if" and
"when" when you asked for "Messages". Once it's switched on it stays on,
even after you close and reopen the program, and it's tucked away in a
part of the window that's usually hidden — so it's very easy to have on
without knowing.
Here's how to turn it off:
1. In Writer, hold Ctrl and press H. (Or use the Edit menu at the top,
then Find & Replace.)
2. Look at the bottom of the window that opens. If you see a button
labelled Other options, click it — the window will get taller and show
more checkboxes.
3. Find the checkbox called Similarity search and click it so the tick
disappears.
4. Click Find and try your search again.
That should make it stop only on the actual word you typed.
If the box was already unticked, then something else is going on and we
need to look into deeper
Can you check which OpenOffice you're using (Help menu → About
OpenOffice), and whether the document has things like comments,
footnotes, or tracked changes in it.
As for the page counter, it is the one in the lower left hand corner. I
was over 6,000 pages. Now it says there are only 140 pages, yet it still
encompasses the full document.
I see. Probably Writer does not see the text and can not split the
document on multiple pages as you would expect. This usually happens
with tables.
here is a guide what you could do:
If a table is set to not break across pages, Writer keeps the whole
thing on one sheet no matter how long it gets — and a table can be
invisible if it has no borders, so you may have them without knowing
(they arrive very easily when text is pasted in from a web page or an
email).
1. Click your mouse into the middle of one of those very long pages.
Then look at the menu bar at the top. Is the Table menu now showing
extra options (like "Table Properties") in black rather than greyed out?
If so, you're inside a table — that's very likely the culprit.
If you are, try this on that one table first:
- With the cursor still inside it, click Table → Table Properties
- Click the Text Flow tab
- Put a tick in Allow table to split across pages and columns and in
Allow row to break across pages and columns
- Click OK
Give Writer a minute to redo the layout, then look at the page count
again. If that one section suddenly spreads over many pages, we've found
it, and you'd just need to do the same to the others.
However i would recommend to copy the text outside the table if you do
not want to have a table.
All the best
Peter

Hi Daniel,
Thank you for reaching out. Please understand that we can not fix anything
that is not reproducible.

I tried to go through your system, but kept running into obstacles. I tried
reporting a bug in Find and Replace. Where instead of searching for what I
wanted to look for, it would stop at every fifth or sixth word. It
would stop at the word I was searching for, such as 'Messages', but kept
also stopping at right, if, when, etc...
This is not a default behavior. I found nothing in our bug tracking. A
quick test in our software did not surface any issue.
Can you provide a step by step guide please?
For example I have loaded o Document "The Unexpected" a short story with
8000 words. no pictures.
1) select find searchfild in the bar.
2) enter "when" and press enter
3) Application highlights when.
4) Click arrow down
5) Shows the next instance.
This would help to try to figure out what actually happens.
Then, I found another bug concerning your page counter. I am working on a
project that in over a thousand pages in length in text documents, yet page
counter only registers 140 pages and one page may cover 50 or more pages. I
have searched for updates and there are none listed, thinking that may be
the issue. So, what is the problem then?
which page counter do you refer to? What do you mean by "one page may
cover 50 or more pages".
This sentence I do not understand.
And what Updates did you look for? Do you look for Apache OpenOffice
updates? And which Version of Apache OpenOffice do you use?
Which Operating System is your system? Is it Windows?
All the best
Peter
