Peter, I use OpenOffice on several machines, Mac and Windows, and “operate” a variety of MS files and formats, from .docx and .xlsx to the earlier sort. I have not had difficulty opening and editing and then saving *as* MSFT files. Depending on the document, the fidelity of translation, from MSFT Office to Apache OpenOffice, is very good. With Excel, one can easily run into issues, should the original Excel document include a wealth of macros, formulae, and so on.
