I've implemented a solution with multiple background images (CSS3).
For IE < 9, I've included a workaround.
So, the both new CSS classes
- tobago-menu-subitem-ancor
- tobago-menu-subitem-arrow
are no longer needed, and they can be removed from custom themes.
