Yes, this is the "Successful software requires more than just technical effort" argument which seems popular at the moment. Here are some ideas along these lines (YMMV): 1. Appoint a dedicated liaison between the primary sponsor of the project (in this case Intel) and the community. He/She should be widely recognized and trusted in the Open Source community. This strategy has helped out Maemo so much that there are now 3 I believe responsible for different areas of Maemo (website, marketing and so on) 2. On the subject of marketing make the community as friendly as possible to new users especially those who want to help but are not technical. In the mobile area this is especially important given the perceived barriers to entry. Things like art/theming/documentation competitions. 3. Have fun and play around. (See my previous post about dropping fedora for slackware as an infrastructure sometime next year ;) or change a link on the moblin website to some funny youtube video or something. 4. Build up trust with the community. A simple e-mail saying "We are thinking of working a bit more on rpm support for Moblin 2...what do people think?" sometime before the recent announcement would have been welcome and would have given the press a "So what" answer from everyone rather than the whiff of controversy they scent now. 5. Do not big up the project. By this I mean the *best* way to work IMO is to say very little about new releases etc but deliver big when the time comes. At least this way no one is disappointed and people *love* to talk to all their friends about this great new thing they found Regards Ian - -- http://ianlawrence.info -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://getfiregpg.org iD8DBQFIkMnSQAt/jhweq/8RAuxdAJ9Q5PtvECLT/2aUufeOq3fXjIohfgCggkYI mAgi4UgZZKVXNqyiDxZ6rig= =j44t -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________ dev mailing list [email protected] https://www.moblin.org/mailman/listinfo/dev
