For the site plugin upgrade, the site.xml descriptors need updating, AFAIK. Are the site.xml descriptors prepared for that plugin version already? I'd say -1 to changing the plugin management in the 4.0.0 super POM. Let's not touch those versions but remove the whole plugin management in 3.5.1.
